Tramore river flooding could have been prevented, says Boyle

Councils have failed to carry out key road works

Over the last months Cork City has had to deal many weather related difficulties, including November's serious flooding and disruption to water supplies caused by the recent big freeze, said Senator Dan Boyle. But, according to the Green Party Chairperson, while heavy rain has contributed to the flooding that has occurred today on the Tramore river at Kinsale road, this is one problem that could have been avoided, he said.

"Part of the difficulty at the area whether the flooding has occurred arises from a failure to approve a road and sluice-gate crossing at the Tramore river," said Senator Boyle.

"While money has been allocated for this purpose in recent years, local authorities have failed to undertake the necessary work.

"In the light of the serious flooding that we are now encountering, this work must now become a priority," said Senator Boyle.

Cork incinerator plans dealt fatal blow
Issued: 22 January 2010

One down, one to go, says Boyle

The indication by An Bord Pleanála that it is to refuse planning permission for a municipal waste incinerator at Ringaskiddy in Cork, undermines the economic viability of a toxic waste incinerator also being proposed, for the area said Green Party Senator Dan Boyle today.

The Bord indicated that it is likely to refuse planning permission in a letter to the proposer Indaver Ireland today.

Senator Boyle said: “Policy changes brought about by the Green Party in Government have established that incineration is not the easiest and cheapest method of waste disposal.

“However indications that An Bord Pleanála may yet think positively towards a hazardous waste incinerator on the site are worrying. I would have serious questions about the flood risk that the proposed facility would cause. A further public planning enquiry is necessary to finally stop this project for good.”
