Boyle welcomes decrease in rate of inflation

Green Party Finance spokesperson Senator Dan Boyle has welcomed today's decrease in the rate of inflation to 2.5%.

"With inflation and the ECB lending rate both lowering, some of the factors that are needed to bring about economic recovery are in place," said Senator Boyle.

"There is now an expectation that inflation will decrease further. If this happens, it should lead to a review of public expenditure and the possibility of savings that are less contentious than those that have been proposed to date."

An Act of bad faith.

Green Party Senator Dan Boyle has described the decision of the Heineken Corporation to close the Beamish and Crawford brewery in Cork as an act of bad faith. In having this takeover approved, it was expected that some rationalisation would take place but no one envisaged the complete shut down of the Beamish and Crawford plant and the laying off of its workforce. In briefings given to public representatives prior to the takeover no indication was given that this course of action was likely. I believe that in light of this decision an investigation needs to be undertaken by the Competition Authority of the process behind this takeover and what undertakings, if any, were given. This is a bad decision for Cork and for the workers of the plant, many of whose families have worked for generations with the company. They and Cork deserve better than this.

Boyle welcomes ECB interest rate drop

The Green Party's Finance spokesperson Dan Boyle welcomed the European Central Bank's decision today to cut interest rates by a historic 0.75%.

Senator Boyle said: "This welcome move from a normally cautious central bank, will provide a helpful stimulus in difficult economic times.

"It is an acknowledgment that the countries which comprise the eurozone are collectively experiencing recession, and bold moves of this type are needed to generate economic recovery"
